How often should
you work out?
The honest answer is the number you will still be doing in three months. Frequency is the one variable people consistently overestimate, and the cost of getting it wrong is not a worse programme, it is an abandoned one.
The health floor
For general health rather than body composition, the World Health Organization and the American College of Sports Medicine both point to roughly 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week, plus muscle strengthening work on two or more days. Two well used strength sessions a week already clears that bar.
What each frequency looks like
- 3 days
- Full body each session. Efficient, forgiving of a missed day, and plenty for a first ninety days
- 4 days
- Usually upper and lower split twice. A good balance of volume and recovery
- 5 days
- More room to specialise, but a missed session starts to matter
- 6 days
- Only worth it if sleep, food and life admin are genuinely under control
Phasebuilt asks for this number and builds the split around it rather than compressing a six day template into three.
Three good days beat six planned ones
A schedule you meet builds evidence that you are someone who trains. A schedule you miss builds the opposite, and that belief is harder to repair than any training deficit. Choose the number you could defend on a bad week, not your best one, and add days later once the habit is boring.
Does frequency change by goal?
Less than people expect. Fat loss is decided mainly by your calorie intake, not by how many times a week you train, though more sessions help you spend more energy and protect muscle. Building muscle responds to weekly volume, which more days makes easier to accumulate but does not require.
Rest days are not lost days
Adaptation happens between sessions. Training every day without a plan for recovery just accumulates fatigue and makes each session worse than the last. If you want to move on rest days, walk.
How long should a session be?
Most productive sessions land between 45 and 75 minutes of actual work. Beyond that, quality usually drops faster than the extra volume is worth. If your sessions are running to two hours, the issue is normally rest periods and phone time rather than the programme.
Pick your days and get a split built around that number.
